September 2013: Competition Corner part 1

09/07/2013 4:02 PM | Anonymous

Wow just like that, summer’s wrapping up and we’re ¾ of the way through the year! I really enjoy summer in Beervana: I get to forget all that crazy competition stuff and just sit and drink beer.

Oh wait, that didn’t happen!

The competition elves have been busy doing all kinds of stuff. Let’s get you an update:

Style Competition Program (SCP)

First off, congrats to our winners from the August competition (Session Styles): Jason Barker claimed 1st and 2nd with his Wit and Pils, respectively. Dean Reiner placed 3rd with a Saison, and Corrie Heath with a Gingerbread Brown took honorable mention. Well done!

Special thanks to our judges. We can’t do this without you.

Septembeer’s SCP will be held at our meeting Sept 12 at FH Steinbart! If you’re bringing a beer or would like to judge, please email competition@oregonbrewcrew.org, and have it in by 7pm. The style this month is Belgian Strong, ideally made with the yeast distributed at the April meeting. Regardless if you’re entering or not, please bring some to share with members and guests to enjoy and learn about examples of this style.

October will be our LAST SCP for the year: the style is Baltic Porters.

Aaron always has great prizes for SCP winners, and all entrants and judges receive HBOY points! (Don’t know what those are? Keep reading!)

HBOY/OBC CUP Updates

For those of you who may not yet be familiar with these: All members are eligible to compete in the OBC Cup program. Only non-board members are eligible to compete in the HBOY program. Members self-report club-supporting volunteerism and competitive brewing achievements online. It’s my responsibility as competition chair to award points based on my interpretation of the posted rules and point structure. This is not always easy: the rules appear to have been written during a 3rd pint, so it takes 3 pints to interpret them. I’m up to the challenge.

At the end of the year, the club will recognize and and reward the winners of each program.

In addition, HBOY points will converted into free raffle tickets at the holiday party. So even if you don’t win, you still win.

You can report your achievements any time throughout the year, and some will even get you points in both systems (see rules posted online). But if you don’t report them, you don’t get any points for them. The final cutoff for reporting will be two weeks before our holiday party: November 30th, 2013.

Here are the current standings for this year, as of Septembeer 6th 2013:

OBC CUP:

1. Jason Barker: 209

2. Chuck Macaluso: 172

3. Ted Assur: 5

-------------------

I’m guessing there might be some more folks who want to bump me out of the running that might not’ve submitted their points yet?

What? You’ve helped the club by volunteering or represented the club in competitions, and your name’s not on these boards? Get your points in: OBC Cup and HBOY submission forms and rules.

As a heads up: this year’s board has been very taking a careful look at the HBOY and OBC Cup systems. We’re finalizing some changes to the systems (for next year) that we hope will help clarify the rules, and improve the experience of participating in the club’s competitive brewing and volunteer reward programs. We plan on announcing those very soon. I want to be clear: any changes we make will affect these programs in the 2014 year, not this year.
