Presidential Pint

Happy Easter and welcome springtime and the month of April! Some of you are hopefully brewing some good beers. As some of you may have heard, Homebrewcon is once again virtual since COVID is still not controlled enough to hold such a large event in San Diego, CA. It will be held June 17-19th and you can register here starting on April 6th. I am looking forward to seeing what the lineup will be and who will be presenting.

More breweries are open now that the COVID numbers are lower than we were a few months ago. I have seen a few new breweries have opened as well as a few have closed their doors. Be sure to support your local breweries and taprooms even if it’s to-go. It all helps to keep our favorite places around.

Now that spring is here it’s the perfect time for us who brew outside. I brew in an open garage so I will likely brew more as the weather is warmer. Remember May 1st is American Homebrewers Association (AHA) Big brew Day, don’t forget to register to brew. It is a great event that will be virtual and a great excuse to brew some beer.

Cheers,

-Jon Campbell

2020-2021 OBC President

Events

Women’s International Beer Summit
:

This event is coming up in April on the weekend of the 24th & 25th.  All sessions will be taped for later viewing if you can’t attend some of it, and because there are concurrent sessions happening, you can’t see them all.
The cost to attend is $40 for this virtual event.
The event is hosted by Oregon Brew Crew/SheBrew and Queen of Beer, with sponsors such as: BSG Hand Craft supplies, American Homebrewers Association, Amoretti, Imperial Yeast and several more businesses and groups in the home brew realm.  Anyone can attend this 30 hours of training, and receive an interactive package and some swag, chances at giveaways including a Grainfater G30 and many more prizes. The schedule of sessions, bios of session leaders, registration sign up, and more details can be found at:

Women's International Beer Summit 2021

After taking a year off like the rest of the world, Melvin Brewing with the help of Craft Beer & Brewing have decided to bring back the Boil Rumble.

This year’s contest will remain mostly the same, but they’re increasing the entries and pushing back the deadline for entry. Homebrew clubs from around the country are allowed to compete with one entry per 25 members in the club (100 members = 4 entries), and if you aren’t in an official homebrew club, you can enter through your local homebrew supply store. For reference we currently have 196 members, so almost 8 entries. Feel free to team up as well, it doesn’t have to be just one person brewing the beer.

A champion and a runner-up will be selected, invited to Melvin’s beautiful home in Alpine, WY to brew with their team, and the champion beer will be canned and sent out to all of their territories around the country.

Contest Details:

  • Must be 21+ to enter

  • No barrel-aged beers or wild ales, preferred turn time of 4 weeks max

  • Each AHA Homebrew Club is allowed 1 entry per 25 members

  • Individuals are allowed one entry through local homebrew shop

  • Deadline window for entries is 7/5/21–7/19/21

  • Entries shipped to Craft Beer & Brewing magazine:

  • Champion and Runner-Up will be announced 8/2/21

  • Champion and Runner-Up invited to brew and chill with the Melvin crew in Alpine 9/6–9/10/21

If you are going to enter this contest give me a heads up at grace.schrick@oregonbrewcrew.org so I can make sure we don’t go over the entry numbers. I will also work on getting a discord discussion for those that want to form groups or discuss. This is a great opportunity to get something you made produced commercially. Get creative 2019’s winner was a New England Breakfast Ale, Brown Ale with syrup and coffee. The entries are due July 19, 2021 so you have lots of time to perfect your recipes, happy brewing!

Competition Corner

NHC:

NHC entries need to arrive this friday April 9th in colorado. Dont forget to get them shipped! And best of luck to our OBC brewers entering the national homebrew competition this year.

Pacific Women Brewers’ Cup: Entries due 5/7

https://reggiebeer.com/ReggieEntry.php?CompetitionID=CIUGII1000620

The Browns Point Homebrew Club, is having a competition for all female identified brewers. Theres not alot of info on the comp site, but they reached out to me and said there would be a Portland drop off point, and possibly, a portland pickup point for remote judging, if you want to judge. I dont have alot of details, but there's plenty of time to brew a beer for it if you are missing the comps this year.

Heart of Cascadia: Entries due 6/4, Judging 6/12

http://hoc.oregonbrewcrew.org

Our annual IPA only comp is going forward this year. We are likely to be remote judging, unless everyone gets vaccinated quickly and things start opening up before june. But hopefully, at least we will be able to meet up and judge our flights in small groups of fellow vaccinated or otherwise comfortable judges in houses and backyards across the city by june. Start brewing your IPAs, you all havent entered many comps in the last year, and we all know how to brew an IPA of some sort, register your beers and judging today, lets get back to a semblance of normality. (even if it is drinking ipas on zoom, small steps…)

Running a remote comp on a short timetable is going to require alot of planning, if you want to help out, please volunteer, at scott.nieradka@oregonbrewcrew.org or hit me up on the OBC discord, we will be meeting in the next week or two to get everything rolling.

OBC Cup

https://oregonbrewcrew.org/obccup

If you are entering comps, please submit your points. There will be enough competitions this year hopefully to have our club competition for the best competing homebrewer. Chuck has won the last so many years, someone has to not make it easy for him this year. Also, im going to be optimistic and say we are going to have a holiday party this year which seems like a distant dream, but in that dream, your entries and medals in comps for OBC earn you sweet, sweet raffle tickets, redeemable for a myriad of potential prizes which will hopefully not be brewery branded n95 masks.

40th Anniversary Gala Update:

Due to current pandemic restrictions, our 40th Anniversary Gala most likely won’t happen in 2021.  We are considering spring 2022. We want to have everyone attend, and at this point with the uncertainty of COVOD vaccinations, we cannot hold the event this year unless things change significantly by the fall.  The OBC Competition Chair is considering holding a couple of competitions in the fall, so and it is possible other activities will start up again by then as well.

Don't forget the OBC Pilot System!

Some of the equipment includes:

   • Added a 2nd, better pump on a new stand
   • Improved the existing pump
   • Added switches to both pumps
   • replaced all of the hoses
   • Added a sparge arm
   • Added a 3rd burner high BTU

Follow the link to use the brew system or to request specific parts for your next brew day!

Burgermeister:

Hello from your Burgermeister,

Each month I try to give you someting good. Something maybe you've never made, or something you have not done in a while. I love exploring new things, even if they end up a flop, I have fun trying them out. Well, why would this month be any different?!

How about a game?! One we have all done, or at least heard of. Ding, dong, ditch! That's right! Ding, dong, ditch! But without the flaming bag of poo. Instead, let's leave a bottle of homebrew at the step and pick up one that was left out for us. I call this a Triple D meeting, hahaa!

I did this with a few of you last year. I brought around a bottle of my Gruit and picked up a bottle or 3, a plant, a book..... Went home and had a zoom with the group as we shared notes on my beer. Oh it was so much fun! I want to do it again. But, who wants to drive to my house? So, here is how we will do this.....

I would like anyone willing, to email me a "Yes" and their address, also tell me how far you are willing/able to go to drop off/pick up. I will make small groups, say 4, and email everyone a list. Let's shoot for March 16th. Your group can discuss a time and even adjust the day as needed. I would like photos, comments, back after said meeting happens please. Then in the April newsletter we will share a bit about how it went. Though Chuck, Jason and I live in St. Helens, I know that we 3 would be up for the drive to be apart of a group, right guys?! I look forward to hearing back from a bunch of you.

Until then,

Keep brewing, keep cooking, and keep safe my friends,

Cheers.

Note from the Treasurer

By Michele Lish, OBC Treasurer

Please remember to use Amazon Smile with OBC as your preferred charity.  AmazonSmile is a simple way for you to support OBC every time you shop, at no cost to you. Go to:  https://smile.amazon.com/gp/chpf/homepage?orig=%2F and click on the “Get Started” button.  You can also download the app for iOS and Android phones. When you shop at AmazonSmile, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added benefit that AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. Just remember to always log in at smile.amazon.com when you shop, and not just amazon.com

Membership Extension:  Don’t forget for those of you who were membership last year, we extended the membership for six month.  Most of you have a Jan 1 due date for your renewal, but now it will be July 1.  For those of you with a different date, that has been adjusted to add six month.  The records still might not reflect that right now so if you get a notice to renew, no need to do that now.  You certainly can renew now if you so choose, and your extension will be applied.  Thank you to those who have done so.

Women’s International Brewing Summit - April 24 & 25:  Please join OBC’s SheBrew in an upcoming two-day virtual training event.  We have partnered with a group from CA that has been hosting female brewers competitions similar to SheBrew, Queen of Beer. Sponsors are AHA, Brewing Supply Group, and Imperial Yeast.  There is a great line-up of instructors.  ANYONE can attend.  Go to https://queenofbeer.beer/ and have a look at the sessions, sign up for a chance to win a scholarship when you register, there are some great give-aways, and you can access all the sessions after the event since you won’t be able to attend them all live.

Introducing the new OBC Discord Server!

Hello everyone, Jim here. I wanted to familiarize everyone with an excellent new resource for OBC members. In September 2020 we rolled out a dedicated, private Discord server for everyone to use as a new way of connecting, collaborating and sharing with fellow members and beer nerds.

What is Discord you ask?

Discord started in 2012 as a social networking platform primarily aimed at gamers. Like Slack, which you may have heard of or use at work now, Discord offers topic-based text channels, audio chat and screen sharing, and lots of great ways to integrate with other public and private web services, like the OBC website and membership system.

Signup for the OBC Discord at:

https://discord.gg/rp33QkJYfj

Benefits of Discord

  • Unlimited topics (brewing help, education, recipes, ingredients, gear, style specific, bjcp, etc)

  • Roles to differentiate members, judges, board members or even volunteers

  • Has a friendly mobile app (phones or tablets)

  • Customize how you are notified of updates (email, app notifications, likes and @mentions)

  • Ability to stream live events, brewdays and more (look for our first live brewday soon!)

  • Automatic posts from HomebrewFinds.com and Brulosophy (more to come)

  • Dozens of file uploads (recipes, presentations, videos

  • More of a “real-time discussion” as opposed to individual posts on a bulletin board

  • For some people, the fact that it is NOT Facebook is a major positive as well

So follow the link above, set up your account (or link your existing account to our server) and jump right in!

Please try to use your full name, or at least most of your name so that people will recognize you. Administrators may override your Username, but don’t worry you can still be “MegaDude95” on your favorite Minecraft server

There will be a brief introduction and tour of the Discord server during the January 14th zoom meeting
