Presidential Pint
Happy September and the start of fall, which is just just around the corner. As you have probably heard we had to postpone the Hair of the Dog (HOTD) meeting which was scheduled to be on 9/7/21. We will try to reschedule it as soon as COVID Delta numbers are down again.
Have you been brewing lately? This is the perfect weather for brewing. It’s not too hot and not too cool, it’s just right. Also there are several Homebrew competitions going on in the near future which is a fun way to get feedback on your beer. If you have never entered your beer into a competition, maybe now is a good time to check it out. If you are a competition veteran you already know the benefits of it. Also remember for these competitions to be successful they need volunteers to help steward and judge, both are very rewarding.
This Thursday Oregon Brew Crew (OBC) will have its monthly meeting via Zoom at the link below. OBC’s very own, Chuck Macaluso will be presenting. Chuck Macaluso recently won gold for his American Barleywine named “Fubarleywine” at the National Homebrew Competition. (photo above)

Competition Corner - September
Fall Classic has been delayed this year due to delta. We moved it back to the latest possible date (the weekend before thanksgiving; it's impossible to find judges between thanksgiving and christmas)
Hopefully we will be back to some level of normality where it makes sense to hold it by then, and we wont hold it if it is not safe to do so.
We need staff for the competition, and volunteers to make it happen. Please contact scott.nieradka@oregonbrewcrew.org if you want to help. And sign up to judge at the site below.
And this is OBC’s big comp of the year you all are morally required to brew something to enter, I know you all make delicious beer, and all styles are accepted.
Rocktoberfest 10/9
Redmond, OR (Steinbarts drop off)
https://reggiebeer.com/ReggieEntry.php?CompetitionID=FSPUWC1000650
Entry Deadline 10/01/2021
This is always a fun smaller all style comp in Oregon, and the organizers are really nice. I went out to judge it last time pre-pandemic and it was a good time, and will probably go out to judge if anyone else wants to join. They went ahead with the comp during the pandemic last year and its a pandemic, but they are saying tables will be distanced and people masked. . OSHBOTY certified. you all should plan on brewing for this competition, theres still time to make many beer styles.
Fall Classic 11/19-11/20 TBD
Portland, OR (Steinbarts drop off)
https://fallclassic.oregonbrewcrew.org/
Entry Deadline 11/12//2021
OBC’s big comp for the year, -- well it will be if we aren't back in lockdown. Sign up to enter beers and to judge/steward at: https://fallclassic.oregonbrewcrew.org/ Proof of vaccination will be required to judge or steward in person. All styles accepted, if it's vaguely beer/cider/mead, we will judge it, and there's plenty of time to brew 90%+ of styles out there. Special award for best new homebrewer if this is your first competition, i've tasted delicious beers at meetings from many of you. You really should enter it, it's all of 8$ and a bit of fun. (special prize for best new homebrewer who this is their first comp)
Lights Out! (Dark beer only) 10/31
Tacoma, WA
https://reggiebeer.com/ReggieEntry.php?CompetitionID=WXQQVT1000638
OBC Cup
https://oregonbrewcrew.org/obccup
If you are entering comps, please submit your points. There will be enough competitions this year hopefully to have our club competition for the best competing homebrewer. Chuck has won the last so many years, someone has to not make it easy for him this year. Also, I'm going to be optimistic and say we are going to have a holiday party this year which seems like a distant dream, but in that dream, your entries and medals in comps for OBC earn you sweet, sweet raffle tickets.

A note from your Burgermeister
Hello friends, and happy harvesting time! One of my favorite times of year! I love picking, processing, canning, smoking, drying, brewing..... All the things this time of year brings. I always feel like a little tree mouse preparing for a hard winter. But then mother nature let's me down, and gives us an extended autumn and then an early spring. Anyway, last month we had to decide whether or not we would have an IN meeting, and because weather was going to bring us some more super hot days, we had to change the date which in turn took us to another COVID 19 set back, and we made our meeting a zoom meeting. That being said, I was all ready with raffle prizes. Remember those?! Our raffles? You all would get raffle tickets for the food you brought to our meetings. Yeah. And I would bring some pretty cool items to raffle off, like gift cards to some places I had never heard of until I searched deep into the pockets of hidden gems Portland has to offer, or coolers full of awesome hand chosen beers, and gift certificates to Steinbarts. Those were the days. Well, I was ready. And I was not going to let this get me down, so I decided I would write down the names of the non-board members that had shown up for the zoom meeting. And what, to my surprise, did I learn? We had 4, FOUR, non-board members show up. So, I wrote those 4 names down. I put their names in a bowl. I asked my son to please chose a name. I videotaped said drawing and sent it to the rest of the board as my video witnesses. And a new member won! Congratulations to Matt Freitag! I wanted to spotlight this moment because this meeting was altered, behind the scenes so many timesbut we still held it. And though only 4 non-board members showed up, I still held the drawing. Matt is a homebrewer from my hometown, St. Helens. Matt started brewing with his brother in law in 2007, shortly after he and his lovely wife moved to St. Helens with the newly started family. He learned everything he needed to get started, from Kevin at Main Brew. He started out brewing extract batches and switched over to all grain in 2009. He now has a half barrel system in place and is working towards brewing professionaly from his home. He started shopping at Steinbart's and of course we appreciate that support as well. I did not ask if this is how he heard about us, but I am glad he has become part of the crew. Matt joined OBC in July. Please welcome Matt, as well as all of our new members. We look forward to hearing their stories as well. (photo below)
As always,
Keep brewing, keep cooking and keep safe my friends
Cheers,
MysTorri

Introducing the new OBC Discord Server!
Hello everyone, Jim here. I wanted to familiarize everyone with an excellent new resource for OBC members. In September 2020 we rolled out a dedicated, private Discord server for everyone to use as a new way of connecting, collaborating and sharing with fellow members and beer nerds.
What is Discord you ask?
Discord started in 2012 as a social networking platform primarily aimed at gamers. Like Slack, which you may have heard of or use at work now, Discord offers topic-based text channels, audio chat and screen sharing, and lots of great ways to integrate with other public and private web services, like the OBC website and membership system.
Signup for the OBC Discord at:
https://discord.gg/rp33QkJYfj
Benefits of Discord
-
Unlimited topics (brewing help, education, recipes, ingredients, gear, style specific, bjcp, etc)
-
Roles to differentiate members, judges, board members or even volunteers
-
Has a friendly mobile app (phones or tablets)
-
Customize how you are notified of updates (email, app notifications, likes and @mentions)
-
Ability to stream live events, brewdays and more (look for our first live brewday soon!)
-
Automatic posts from HomebrewFinds.com and Brulosophy (more to come)
-
Dozens of file uploads (recipes, presentations, videos
-
More of a “real-time discussion” as opposed to individual posts on a bulletin board
-
For some people, the fact that it is NOT Facebook is a major positive as well
So follow the link above, set up your account (or link your existing account to our server) and jump right in!
Please try to use your full name, or at least most of your name so that people will recognize you. Administrators may override your Username, but don’t worry you can still be “MegaDude95” on your favorite Minecraft server
