Presidential Pint

Happy June 2022! I hope you all had a good May and are brewing for the OBC’s Heart of Cascadia! I just brewed a west coast style IPA for it. Last month we had an in meeting at FH Steinbarts and learned about off flavors and met several new members! Thank you Alex and Scott for the education. It was a fun meeting!

This month in Portland Oregon is Portland Cider Summit at Fields Park. It is a great event with over 150 selections from over 40 producers. It takes place from Friday June 10th to June 11th. Check out their website for details. It looks like a lot of fun. Check it out!

Your OBC board has been working on a calendar for in vs out meetings so you can plan. We are still finalizing locations and educational topics. We hope you will enjoy the results. We will put out the information as soon as it is available.

Cheers,

-Jon Campbell

2020-2022 OBC President

Free Beer

For the meetings…

We need beer for the meetings! We are looking for members to sign up and bring kegs to our In-meetings held at Steinbarts. To help incentivize and off set the cost of ingredients we are giving a $10 Steinbarts gift certificate to anyone who brings a keg.

Please sign up before the meeting so we know who is bringing beer. We have In-meetings scheduled for July, September, October and November.

Members can always bring bottles and growlers as well but this incentive only applies to kegs. To sign up for these meetings please email grace.schrick@oregonbrewcrew.org.

Cheers,

Grace Schrick

Vice President

Events Update

Hello OBC members! June is here and with that we welcome in warmer weather and more delicious beer!

Thank you to everyone who participated and brewed at the Big Brew Day Event in May. We had some diverse beers being made and I am looking forward to trying everyone's beer.

This month's out meeting will be held at Threshold Brewing and I am sure they will have some awesome knowledge and great beers for you to try.

Portland Beer Week is in June. June 17th-26th so get out there and enjoy some of those amazing breweries.

July is the busy month for us as a club. We have the Portland Craft Beer Festival July 1-3 and the Oregon Brewers Festival July 28-30 in which we need volunteers as we will again this year be setting up the booth at both events. Volunteers for brewing will get your ingredients paid for up to $50! Also need volunteers to man the booth and to pour beers. I will have more information in a coming email in regards to both.

Please email me Bill.midkiff@oregonbrewcrew.org if you are interested in volunteering.

OBC Members Support Gay Pride

Michele Lish has help organize a homebrew People’s Choice Award being held during a Gay Pride country dance put on by the nonprofit group, Stomptown -https://stomptown.org/ .

It will be held on Friday June 17 th at 204 NW 4 th Ave. and it a 21 and over event. The dance with start with a line dance lesson at 7:30 PM where the “Tush Push” will be taught, then music will play for people to two-step, swing, waltz and more line dancing. It is open to everyone, and is always a fun time, even if you just want to watch some great dancing.

OBC members and former members are contributing beer that will be given away to attendees, who then will pick their favorite for the People Choice trophy. Beer donations are from Jim & Meagan Thompson, Dan Koperski, Bill Midkiff, Kathleen Frietag and Michele Wonder. OBC is a diverse group of members, and one of our goals is to educate people about the great beers home brewers can make. This event will do just that.

Treasurer Update

NEW ADDRESS FOR OBC

We will start getting OBC club mail at FH Steinbart’s. The reason for the change is that OBC gets very little mail and the cost of renting a small post office box keeps going up.

In the last 5 years it has doubled. Getting a dozen pieces of mail each year is just not worth the cost. This has been coordinated with Mark Gillette from Steinbart’s. The new address is:

Oregon Brew Crew
c/o FH Steinbart Co.
234 SE 12th Ave
Portland, OR 97214

Please change this in you contact lists, and on any business documents.

CURRENT FINANCIAL STATUS

If anyone wants to see the complete accounting spreadsheet, I’m happy to send it to you or show you in person. It is done using Excel, or I can create a PDF.

I had to transfer some funds from our savings account to pay annual bills, but that is normal operating procedure. We generally can keep up because income is close to expenses, but membership is down and we haven’t seen much income yet as events haven’t started. However, our bank account balance has weathered dealing with challenges of these past two and a half years. We will be getting some donated funds from participation in events coming up soon (July is our busy time), but no without participation by OBC members who volunteer to help. Two events donate to OBC:Nano Beer Fest and Portland Craft Brew Festival (PCBF). However, that only happens because we give in return. We need members to volunteer. You can even ask family and friends to help, and they get the same gifts for participation as you do. Benefits from volunteering include entry to the event, free mug and beer tokens, event t-shirts and growler fills. You also get recognition from the club if you fill out the member points form - find that in the membership section. The Events Chair, Bill Midkiff is the contact person for this. We also will need help staffing our membership booth at the PCBF and the Oregon Brewers Festival (both in July).

Amazon Smile: Don’t forget to set your Amazon account to identify OBC as your charity of choice. We get a small donation from them for every purchase that has this noted. It all adds up.

Thank You Mark:

I want to personally thank Mark Gillette from FH Steinbart, Co. for facilitating the Big Brew Day event held at Homebrew Exchange in North Portland on Saturday May 7th . We had a nice event with food (provided by OBC and prepared by our Burgermeister, Torri Hansmann), half a dozen brewers, and got to talk with people about the club and brewing. I think we even got a new member out of it. Steinbart’s gave a discount on ingredients for those who brewed, as they have done for years. Also, they are finding a way to continue this effort for club member discount purchases. I will be sending Mark our current membership list so he can work within his accounting system to be sure you can get the benefit.

40th Anniversary Party Scheduled!

The new date will be Saturday, November 5th.

The event will be held at the Laurelhurst Club, and the food will be catered and served buffet style. The committee has met a few times via emails and we need some help as we start up the process again. We also might be opening up ticket sales again as we have paid for more food and rental space than seats we have filled at this point. More on that soon.

Where we need help:

  • Coordinating communications (emails, announcements to attendees, ticket sales)
  • Coordinating all the vendors (who is picking up, returning, setting up equipment)
  • Where are we sourcing beers from? Asking for keg donations, setting up beer menus
  • Coordinating jockey boxes, pouring, ice
  • Getting a team to decorate, setup, breakdown, clean afterwards
  • Overseeing the food setup and service, managing the cake (cutting and serving)
  • Transportation of all the stuff out of storage to the event day of, and returning it somewhere after
  • Coordinating the awards and presentations (some of that work is already done)
  • Getting the beers to / from the site
  • After party organization – what to do with left over beer and will we still “party on” at Belmont Station?

If a few people help, it will be less work for each of us. Please let me know what you can help with.

Michele Lish

Introducing the new OBC Discord Server!

Hello everyone, Jim here. I wanted to familiarize everyone with an excellent new resource for OBC members. In September 2020 we rolled out a dedicated, private Discord server for everyone to use as a new way of connecting, collaborating and sharing with fellow members and beer nerds.

What is Discord you ask?

Discord started in 2012 as a social networking platform primarily aimed at gamers. Like Slack, which you may have heard of or use at work now, Discord offers topic-based text channels, audio chat and screen sharing, and lots of great ways to integrate with other public and private web services, like the OBC website and membership system.

Signup for the OBC Discord at:

https://discord.gg/rp33QkJYfj

Benefits of Discord

  • Unlimited topics (brewing help, education, recipes, ingredients, gear, style specific, bjcp, etc)

  • Roles to differentiate members, judges, board members or even volunteers

  • Has a friendly mobile app (phones or tablets)

  • Customize how you are notified of updates (email, app notifications, likes and @mentions)

  • Ability to stream live events, brewdays and more (look for our first live brewday soon!)

  • Automatic posts from HomebrewFinds.com and Brulosophy (more to come)

  • Dozens of file uploads (recipes, presentations, videos

  • More of a “real-time discussion” as opposed to individual posts on a bulletin board

  • For some people, the fact that it is NOT Facebook is a major positive as well

So follow the link above, set up your account (or link your existing account to our server) and jump right in!

Please try to use your full name, or at least most of your name so that people will recognize you. Administrators may override your Username, but don’t worry you can still be “MegaDude95” on your favorite Minecraft server
