Presidential Pint

Happy September and the beginning of fall. This is one of my favorite times of the year for all of that fresh hop or wet hop beer. There are several festivals to get your fresh hop beer at including Sisters Fresh Hop Festival on September 24th, Portland Fresh Hop Festival at Oaks Amusement Park from September 30th to October 1st, Fresh Hop Pop Up at Prost starting on September 16th to October 2nd, Hood River Hops Fest on October 1st, and Yakima Fresh Hop Ale Festival on October 8th. Please check the festival websites for more info about these great annual events. I am sure there are also a few others I’ve missed as well. Of course, you can also go to your favorite brewery or tap house to find a fresh hop beer.

Last month’s meeting was a fun get together with many of you at Steeplejack Brewing. It is a very nice old church that was converted into a brewery and tap house. It was also nice to have OBC lifetime member, and retired brewer Rob Widmer show up and hangout. Although there was no education it was good to catch up with friends.

I would like to remind all members that when we are at an out meeting we are all representing the Oregon Brew Crew, not just your board. It is important that we are all on our best behavior and representing our club (Club Bylaws). Remember if someone sees or hears one of us being disrespectful or inappropriate then they say the whole club is that way. I trust you are all doing a good job representing OBC, but wanted to send out a reminder.

The September OBC meeting will be on Thursday 9/8/22 at FH Steinbart’s at 7pm. Dave Coyne of Obelisk Beer Co., formerly Barrel Program Manager at Fort George, will do a presentation on barrel aging.

Free Beer!

For the meetings…

We need beer for the meetings! We are looking for members to sign up and bring kegs to our In-meetings held at Steinbarts. To help incentivize and off set the cost of ingredients we are giving a $10 Steinbarts gift certificate to anyone who brings a keg.

Please sign up before the meeting so we know who is bringing beer. We have In-meetings scheduled for July, September, October and November.

Members can always bring bottles and growlers as well but this incentive only applies to kegs. To sign up for these meetings please email grace.schrick@oregonbrewcrew.org.

Burgermeister Brews News 

Hello friends, fellow brewers, fellow food eaters,

Here comes September with promises of cooler weather and ripe gardens of food and hops to harvest. And? And? And our second annual Cheese In Mac Cook-off!

Thank the stars we can get together again for this one to continue. So, here's how it goes. You make your best Mac In Cheese, bring it to the In Meeting labeled with GF/NOT GF, onions/no onions, meat additions,/vegetarian/vegan, maybe even smoked, spicy, dessert style. Do you remember our first annual cheese Cook-off? I made a blueberry Cheese In Mac and it was well received.  So bring your A game!

As a reminder, your Burgermeister is deathly allergic to onions/chives/shallots so please keep in mind that if you add these I won't be able to judge your Mac, but if you need to add them just let me know so I won't die. 


I have three prizes for the top 3 voted macs. Each member/guest will get 3 votes.
If you don't want to enter, we would love other foods too. Fruits, salads, chips n dips.... And you will be put in a raffle for a gift certificate to an undisclosed place.

Don't forget that I love help, with setup and tear down. It helps me get home sooner than 11 which I appreciate since I do work 10 hour shifts Fridays.

Competition Corner - September

Upcoming Competitions:

Rocktoberfest, 10/1, Redmond OR, https://cfahomebrew.org/wp/  Entries need to be registered by 9/16, and dropped off (steinbarts is a drop off point) by 9/23. Judging is at Mecca Grade Malt in Madras; I usually try to judge this comp every year as its a small club, and they can use the judges, but i cant get to mecca grade by bus, so if anyone is heading out to judge that I can ride with let me know. 

Fall Classic,11/11-11/12 Portland OR. https://fallclassic.oregonbrewcrew.org/ Drop off at Steinbarts and elsewhere by 11/4. Judging at Imperial Yeast. All styles accepted, plenty of time to brew, no reason not to enter something for fun, and support the club. Judges and stewards always needed and appreciated. This is OBC's large competition of the year; if you wish to help organize, contact scott.nieradka@oregonbrewcrew.org

Hello intrepid members from your Membership Chair!

It was great to see so many of you at the Oregon Brewers Festival! What a wonderful tradition we have there at the waterfront. The OBF festival is truly a local treasure for trying varied beers from our legion of great Oregon brewers but it's also an effective way for new people to connect with our club. Nearly 50 people stopped by our booth over the course of the weekend and signed up to get more information on our club.

Talking to prospective new members at this event was a good reminder of all of the things that make our club special. Here are just a few:

  • Encouraging newer Brewers to take up this rewarding hobby.
  • Learning about new beer styles through education presentations and by trying new beers when a member brings in a sample of their latest treasure.
  • The potluck feast that we have at our In Meetings!
  • The feedback on the beer that we brew – it always helps to talk to someone who really knows their stuff.
  • The amazing pilot system- the first five times I brewed were on our pilot system.
  • The 10% discount at FH Steinbart company- it’s back!
  • The ‘Out’ meetings at awesome breweries!
  • All the amazing Education topics!
  • Most importantly, the people I’ve met at the meetings and through the meetings, wow truly a unique group of individuals.
I look for to seeing all of you at our next meeting!

This brings me to the most important point of this missive- what would you like to see changed, updated, upgraded, deleted, enhanced or just freaking, by all means, left alone with our club? 

As your membership chair, I wield vast influence over the direction of our club. Not actually, but I am someone who is very willing to bring up new ideas and am not afraid to jeopardize the vast sums of cash my position affords me. Let me know, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Introducing the new OBC Discord Server!


Hello everyone, Jim here. I wanted to familiarize everyone with an excellent new resource for OBC members. In September 2020 we rolled out a dedicated, private Discord server for everyone to use as a new way of connecting, collaborating and sharing with fellow members and beer nerds.

What is Discord you ask?

Discord started in 2012 as a social networking platform primarily aimed at gamers. Like Slack, which you may have heard of or use at work now, Discord offers topic-based text channels, audio chat and screen sharing, and lots of great ways to integrate with other public and private web services, like the OBC website and membership system.
