FH Steinbarts

Presidential Pint

Happy July and hopefully you are enjoying summer! Now that the state has reduced restrictions due to COVID vaccinations. You can enjoy beer at your local brewery or tap house with friends and family. FH Steinbarts is open for in person shopping again.

McMenamins Edgefield is having its 3rd annual brewfest on 7/10/21 from 1-7pm. Yakima, WA is having its annual Fresh Hop festival on 10/2/21 from 5-10pm at SOZO Sports Complex. I am sure there will be more to follow.

Oregon Brew Crew has opted to have its first in person meeting on July 8, 2021 at 7pm at FH Steinbarts. There will be no formal training, just some socializing and talking about homebrew and catching up with friends. If you do not feel comfortable to meet in person we will still offer the zoom option. If you have any questions please feel free to email your board Here. I hope to see you soon!

Congrats to Chuck Macaluso with a gold in NHC for his barleywine! Way to go Chuck! Maybe this is the year he wins the Oregon State Homebrewer of the year, he is currently in first off of this impressive win, with 2 more comps to go.

We had a record 97 entries this year, Judging went smoothly and it went well over all for being remote. Congrats to OBC medal winners Jeremy Fretz, Ian Romanick, Chuck Macaluso, Mike Johnson, Caleb Cushing, and special congratulations to BOS winner Caleb Cushing!

Best of the Bay 8/7

Bellingham, WA

Entry Deadline: 07/24/2021

Feast of St Arnold Homebrew Competition. 8/7

Colorado Springs, CO

Entry Deadline 07/23/2021

An interesting comp for historical style beers/gruits, that requires a historical justification. If thats your jam check it out.

Rocktoberfest 10/9

Redmond, OR (Steinbarts drop off)

Entry Deadline 10/01/2021

This is always a fun smaller all style comp in oregon, and the organizers are really nice, I went out to judge it last time pre pandemic and it was a good time, and will probably go out to judge if anyone else wants to join. Not yet OSHBOTY certified but will be soon, you all should plan on brewing for this competition, its near fall classic, so just bottle a few more bottles.

Fall Classic 10/15-16 TBD

Portland, OR

OBC’s big comp for the year. Not officially registered yet, but we are looking at the weekend of 10/15, 10/16, save the date, confirmation of a date in a week or two, but it is happening this year. Definitely plan to brew something, all styles accepted, never entered before? Its a great comp for your first competition, run by the OBC, all styles, judging is usually good, this is plenty of notice and time to brew for it. All of you should brew something, I promise it will at least be moderately fun.

Lights Out! (Dark beer only) 10/31

Tacoma, WA

If you are entering comps, please submit your points. There will be enough competitions this year hopefully to have our club competition for the best competing homebrewer. Chuck has won the last so many years, someone has to not make it easy for him this year. Also, im going to be optimistic and say we are going to have a holiday party this year which seems like a distant dream, but in that dream, your entries and medals in comps for OBC earn you sweet, sweet raffle tickets.

Membership Extension:  Don’t forget for those of you who were membership last year, we extended the membership for six month.  Most of you have a Jan 1 due date for your renewal, but now it will be July 1.  For those of you with a different date, that has been adjusted to add six month.  The records still might not reflect that right now so if you get a notice to renew, no need to do that now.  You certainly can renew now if you so choose, and your extension will be applied.  Thank you to those who have done so.

Introducing the new OBC Discord Server!

Hello everyone, Jim here. I wanted to familiarize everyone with an excellent new resource for OBC members. In September 2020 we rolled out a dedicated, private Discord server for everyone to use as a new way of connecting, collaborating and sharing with fellow members and beer nerds.

What is Discord you ask?

Discord started in 2012 as a social networking platform primarily aimed at gamers. Like Slack, which you may have heard of or use at work now, Discord offers topic-based text channels, audio chat and screen sharing, and lots of great ways to integrate with other public and private web services, like the OBC website and membership system.

Signup for the OBC Discord at:

Benefits of Discord

  • Unlimited topics (brewing help, education, recipes, ingredients, gear, style specific, bjcp, etc)

  • Roles to differentiate members, judges, board members or even volunteers

  • Has a friendly mobile app (phones or tablets)

  • Customize how you are notified of updates (email, app notifications, likes and @mentions)

  • Ability to stream live events, brewdays and more (look for our first live brewday soon!)

  • Automatic posts from HomebrewFinds.com and Brulosophy (more to come)

  • Dozens of file uploads (recipes, presentations, videos

  • More of a “real-time discussion” as opposed to individual posts on a bulletin board

  • For some people, the fact that it is NOT Facebook is a major positive as well

So follow the link above, set up your account (or link your existing account to our server) and jump right in!

Please try to use your full name, or at least most of your name so that people will recognize you. Administrators may override your Username, but don’t worry you can still be “MegaDude95” on your favorite Minecraft server
